Brett James Smith

American, Born 1958

Louisiana sporting artist Brett Smith received his early training from his grandfather – who took him fishing and camping – and his father, an art director who taught him to succeed by focusing on his passion. In his paintings, Smith’s concentration is on the mood, where he looks to provide a feeling of how things were and how they could still be. Although it is a meticulous practice, he strives to produce a rustic appearance that cannot be duplicated in any other medium.

Smith's work has been featured in publications including Gray's Sporting Journal, Ducks Unlimited magazine, Sporting Classics, Shooting Sportsman, and Double Gun Journal. He has contributed to several books, most recently a reprint of William Faulkner's classic Big Woods. Smith has been recognized for his work by such organizations as the Gulf Coast Conservation Association, the Atlantic Salmon Federation, the Ruffed Grouse Society, and Ducks Unlimited.
