Roger Dale Brown to give Art Talk and Demo
Saturday, August 2 from 10 am to Noon

THOMASTON— Art lovers and fans of plein air landscapes are in for a treat this summer at Haynes Galleries. Roger Dale Brown will give an artist talk and a live demonstration on Saturday August 2 from 10 am to noon at Haynes Galleries in Thomaston. The event is in conjunction with his solo exhibition “Roger Dale Brown: Painting Maine,” which opens July 31 and runs until August 30. Both the artist talk and exhibition are free and open to the public.

During his talk, Brown will recount stories from his numerous painting expeditions including a trip to Maine’s midcoast which will take place just a few days prior to the talk. He will also give a live outdoor demonstration, weather permitting, so guests can see and experience Brown’s award-winning plein air style in person. Brown will describe each step as he takes it, each brushstroke as he applies it.

By the end of the talk and demo, it will be clear why Brown’s work has been so sought after. His views of Maine’s rocky shores, boats bobbing in harbors, and iconic lighthouses are the result of Brown truly seeing what is before him and recognizing the colors and shapes that make up each vista. In turn, the work feels real, like you’re standing there on the sand with the warmth of the sun on your face.

Brown and his wife, fellow painter Beverly Ford Evans, spend a significant portion of their time traveling, searching out vistas to capture on canvas. They’ve traveled to Maine the last three summers, always returning for more. Brown says he’s mesmerized by the charm, history, and natural beauty of Maine.

Plein Air Master Roger Dale Brown to give Artist Talk
Saturday, September 7 from 1 to 2 p.m.
At Haynes Galleries in Thomaston

THOMASTON — In conjunction with his upcoming “Maine Impressions” exhibition, plein air painter Roger Dale Brown will give a gallery talk — and, perhaps, a demonstration — at Haynes Galleries from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7.

This end-of-summer show, featuring plein air paintings completed this summer during Brown’s stay in Maine and a few studio pieces inspired by his 2012 visit, will run Sept. 6-28 at 91 Main St. in Thomaston. An opening reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6. All events are free and open to the public.

During the gallery talk, Brown will share stories and insights from his month-long painting sojourn in Midcoast Maine. He always has a brush in his hand and paint at the ready, so it is highly likely that he’ll give a live demonstration, weather permitting.

Brown and his fiancée, the painter Beverly Ford Evans, spent the summer of 2012 on the Maine coast. They were so captivated that they extended their travels in 2013, starting on the Midcoast and venturing inland to explore the hills and waterfalls, learning more about the people and culture of the Pine Tree State along the way. Though he calls Tennessee home, Brown finds himself captivated with the history and charm of Maine.

“There’s a feeling about places that have been lived in for a long time,” Brown says. “Certain places feel like they have an old soul. They’re artistic and more painterly.”

Painters Linden Frederick and Vincent Giarrano “Talking Art”
Saturday, June 29 from 1 to 2 pm at Haynes Galleries in Thomaston.

THOMASTON — Haynes Galleries presents an opportunity to chat with two of today’s most exciting realist painters. Maine’s own Linden Frederick and Connecticut-based artist Vincent Giarrano will be “Talking Art” from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at 91 Main St. in Thomaston. Frederick’s "Untold Stories" includes quiet, dusky scenes of rural America that hint at lives hidden from view. Giarrano’s "Truth and Beauty" uncovers the quiet moments in bustling urban lives — finding beauty in the mundane, tranquility in the chaos. Each presents a compelling — and completely different – way of looking at the American landscape. One urban, one rural. One quiet, one bustling. Both masterful.

Haynes Galleries is located at 91 Main St., Thomaston, Maine. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and by appointment. For more information, call 207.354.0605.

Haynes Galleries presents “Peter Poskas: Summer Lights”
August 31 to September 29. Reception: August 31, 6 to 8 p.m.

Haynes Galleries is pleased to present “Summer Lights,” the luminous landscapes of contemporary American realist Peter Poskas. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, and the show will be on view through Sept. 29 at Haynes Galleries, 91 Main St., Thomaston. The event is free and open to the public. Though Connecticut is his year-round home, Poskas can’t resist the call of the Maine coast come summertime. While the lush green of a Connecticut summer absorbs and flattens the light, coastal Maine, with its rocky, sandy, relatively treeless landscape, has a purity and intensity of light that has attracted artists for centuries.

The sunlight in Maine is a tempestuous muse — white and thin at midday, soft and dappled in the morning mist, glowing and golden as the sun slips behind the horizon. Peter Poskas has mastered every facet, distilling the incandescent glow after a passing shower, the soft, clear reflections of a Port Clyde morning; a gilded sunset over Stonington.

Haynes Galleries presents
Jesús Emmanuel Villarreal: Mirrors
August 3 to August 28. Reception: August 3, 6 to 8 p.m.

Haynes Galleries is pleased to present an exhibition by Jesús Emmanuel Villarreal, which runs August 3-August 28 at 91 Main Street in Thomaston.

For Jesús Emmanuel Villarreal, a rising star in American Realism, painting is a journey toward truth in life and in art. His technique — in his portraits, a deeply nuanced chiaroscuro; in his still lifes, a luminosity that makes them glow from within — is reminiscent of the Dutch Masters, yet at the same time, his work feels completely fresh.
