Harvey Peterson to give Art Talk about His
Whimsical Folk Sculptures & Maine Monotype Prints
Saturday, August 19 from 10 am to Noon

THOMASTON— He's a sculptor and a painter with decades of creating under his belt. But the products of Harvey Peterson’s creation are unexpected. Peterson has taken familiar genres and imagery and turned them on their heads with pleasantly surprising results. Peterson will discuss his wood and found-object sculptures as well as his painted monoprints at an Art Talk at Haynes Galleries in Thomaston on August 19. The talk begins at 10am and continues until noon. The talk is in conjunction with the current exhibition at Haynes Galleries “Harvey Peterson’s Contemporary Folk Art Sculptures & Maine Monoprints” which is on view until September 9.

During his talk Peterson will delve into what inspires the sculptures that have captivated Maine collectors and art enthusiasts for years. Truly unlike anything else around, Peterson’s wood sculptures combine the whimsy and uniqueness of folk art with fine art design and craftsmanship.

Using a specific sculpture from his show Peterson will breakdown his process, from the conception of an idea to the design stage to the execution. He’ll showcase sketch and idea books so guests can see and understand the mind of the artist.

While Peterson’s folk art figures have grabbed the spotlight, another of his artistic outputs have also fascinated guests. His monoprint views of Maine combine painting and printmaking, creating an unfamiliar and interesting visual effect. Peterson will talk about these monoprints also during the art talk including how he picks each view, how he transfers his sketch, and the process of painting.

Peterson’s artistic journey began at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He then spent the next several decades as an instructor at Baltimore-area schools and colleges, teaching young artists how to create while simultaneously painting and exhibiting his own original artworks before he moved to Maine twenty years ago.

Visitors to Harvey Peterson’s exhibition have so far have been fascinated by both the inventiveness of the sculptures and the expressiveness of the prints. Peterson’s creativity is boundless and the Art Talk will delve into the mind of this innovative artist.
