THOMASTON— Imaginative narrative is on display this summer at Haynes Galleries in “The Magical & Mystical Paintings of Seth Haverkamp.” Haverkamp’s colorful and vivid portraits and figure paintings passionately capture drama and emotion. Several new paintings by this rising voice in American contemporary realism will be on view beginning July 6 in Thomaston. The exhibition continues until September 9. An opening reception to celebrate the show takes place the evening of July 6 from 5 to 7:30 pm.

For the last several years, Seth Haverkamp has been consistently creating some the most noteworthy portraits of contemporary representational art. Haverkamp’s paintings are bold images of the people in this life— his children, family, and friends. The paintings though are remarkably universal. They take one moment in time and capture drama, emotion, and mystery with color and care.

Many are completed with Seth’s unique treatment of backgrounds: a nondescript mix of studio backdrops and delicate paint splatter. Curious accessories are also a frequent feature like homemade headdresses of feathers and twigs, sheets of fabric made to look like wings, and paper cranes. The combination of background and curious accessories create an aura that only augments each painting’s enchanting quality.

Collectors, critics, and patrons have taken notice of Haverkamp’s portraits. He is highly-sought out for commissioned portraits. Also, five times in his relatively young career Seth has had a painting in the prestigious International Portrait Competition, the annual juried competition present by the Portrait Society of America that draws thousands of applicants from around the world.

Haverkamp has said about all his portraits that he just tries to paint what is beautiful & what he finds interesting. There is no planned deeper meaning to them. The inspiration can hit at any moment. Usually one of his children will be doing something in their home—playing with a toy, building something, dressing up— that Haverkamp finds visually interesting. He’ll recreate the activity and the moment in the studio to get it just right and capture in paint.

But it is hard to not read something into Haverkamp’s paintings. They are full of intrigue and visual splendor. “The Magical & Mystical Paintings of Seth Haverkamp” compels viewers to look longer, to explore the mystery, and revel in the visually alluring images of a distinct voice in Contemporary Realism.
