Sookyi Lee

Sookyi Lee was born in Seoul, Korea and earned her BFA from Hongik University. She continued her study in the US and earned her MFA from Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Upon her graduation, she worked as a faculty at the University. She currently works as a full-time artist and teaches regularly at Scottsdale Artists’ School.

Sookyi has participated in many exhibitions, including Oil Painters of America's National Juried Exhibition and Salon International Juried Exhibitions. She received many awards for her art including two Best Portrait Awards from the National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society’s ‘Best of America’ competitions and two First Place in Drawing awards at the Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competitions (in 2017 and 2019).

To Sookyi, a deep understanding and execution of art is a lifelong mission, and painting is her way to appreciate life. Her paintings are not only representations of the outside world, but also reflections of her inner self. Her artistic style is influenced by old masters and her contemporaries alike and she continues the tradition of representative fine art.

“The beauty of nature is both omnipresent and illusive. Although beauty is everywhere, we have masked ourselves from understanding or even seeing this beauty. We have trained ourselves to be ashamed of our bodies and become increasingly apathetic to the beauty of the natural world. The goal of my work is to seek, capture, understand and unleash the innate beauty that lies silently dormant within human figure and in nature. Only then can I invite the viewer to pierce through their conventional perceptions and penetrate the beauty within all things.”
